Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) using the vitrification method allows the use of these eggs at a later date. Using this method, egg survival rates are high thus allowing postponement of motherhood with high chances of success.
This is important for women who would like to store eggs before undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy or other treatments that may affect their future fertility.
We also store eggs for social reasons, for women who are not currently ready to start a family but want to preserve high levels of fertility. The eggs that are frozen at a younger age are of better quality than those produced by older women.
Egg freezing is recommended for the following cases:
- Women who wish to postpone motherhood.
- Cancer and other patients who will receive gonadotoxic therapy (medical treatment harmful to the ovaries).
- Women who have undergone extensive ovarian surgery, for example in severe endometriosis.
- When sperm is not available on the day of ovulation to make fertilization possible.
- Couples who do not wish to freeze embryos for religious or cultural reasons.
- Patients who have a poor response and opt to accumulate eggs.

Egg freezing for women with cancer
Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) for women with cancer allows postponing pregnancy until the patient has recovered from the illness, with the same reproductive prognosis as when the eggs were originally frozen.
It is important to get information and/or advice on fertility preservation options as soon as patients are diagnosed and chemotherapy is considered.
When egg vitrification is considered for cancer patients, there are many factors to take into account, such as age, ovarian function and reserve, the time available prior to chemotherapy, and whether or not there is consensus from the oncology specialist. The reproductive prognosis will largely depend on the number of eggs available freeze.
Sperm freezing
You may need to freeze sperm to preserve fertility before certain medical procedures or during a fertility treatment cycle:- If the partner’s presence on the day of ovulation is not possible.
- Before chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
- Before any surgery that may result in reduced male fertility.
- In cases of sperm retrieval by testicular biopsy.
- Prior to a fertility treatment cycle as a backup sample for the day of treatment.
